Helldivers 2 Sample Collection: Difficulty, Extraction and Session Planning
Plan sample collection around the resource you need and a mission your group can complete. An efficient route is not useful if the collection does not make it back, and this site has no measured samples-per-hour route to promise.

Correcting the old difficulty rule
Arrowhead’s June 2024 Patch 01.000.400 introduced Super Samples on difficulty 6. Our previous guide incorrectly treated difficulty 7 as the minimum. That dated change is evidence against the old rule; use current mission information to check what is available in the build you play.
Collection and return are separate steps
PlayStation’s cadet guide describes samples as resources to collect and carry back for upgrades. Separate what you pick up during a mission from what your inventory shows afterward.
| Stage | Action to plan |
|---|---|
| Before launch | Record your needed resource and inventory; agree on collection versus objective priorities. |
| During play | Record useful locations and decide whether a detour fits remaining time and squad conditions. |
| If the carrier is lost | Agree whether recovering the dropped collection is feasible; avoid an automatic second loss. |
| After the mission | Check the inventory change and note interruptions or unresolved rewards. |
Use whole-session time
In an illustrative session, gaining 12 of a needed resource over 40 minutes is 18 per hour for that session. Counting only a five-minute pickup segment would imply 144 per hour and hide the time needed to get there and finish. Neither calculation predicts the next mission.
Choose a repeatable objective
Compare completed sessions with the same time basis, resource type and difficulty. A longer run with more total samples may still produce fewer of the specific resource you need. Do not combine common, rare and super resources into a single score unless your upgrade goal needs them in that mix.
We have removed unsupported fixed rock counts, a universal minimap marker and a guaranteed ten-minute route. Use the resource planner to identify the shortfall before collecting.
Three sample rarities, with availability shown at mission selection
Arrowhead’s resource FAQ lists three sample rarities and explains that the difficulty-selection display shows availability. Read that display for the mission you are choosing instead of using one old rule for every location.
There is a documented reason not to repeat “Super Samples require difficulty 7” as an unchanging rule: Patch 01.000.400 added their spawning at difficulty 6. That is a dated change; the current selector is the practical check for your next mission.
Collected is not the same as brought back
The official cadet guide tells players to recover dropped samples after a death so they can be brought back. Treat a pickup count as a temporary mission state. For a sample-focused run, include recovery and the return plan when comparing routes, rather than optimizing only how quickly you reach a deposit.
A useful squad call is “we need the dropped samples before leaving,” followed by a location and a realistic recovery plan. If the group cannot retrieve them safely, record the result as an unsuccessful sample return rather than as the route’s expected yield. Use the shortfall calculator to work out which rarity is your actual bottleneck.
