Helldivers 2 Armor Penetration & Weapon Mechanics Explained: Light, Medium & Heavy Breakpoints

Data Intel: Armor Penetration & Damage Calculation Matrix

Weapon performance in Helldivers 2 cannot be understood through raw base damage numbers alone. Arrowhead utilizes a nuanced system incorporating 10 discrete Armor Value (AV) tiers, angle-of-incidence ricochet physics, and body-part “Durable Damage” scaling.

Armor Values (AV) vs. Armor Penetration (AP)

Every enemy body part (e.g., Bile Titan forehead, Devastator chest, Charger leg) is assigned an Armor Value from 0 to 10. When your projectile strikes a surface, the game compares the weapon’s Armor Penetration value against that specific surface AV:

Condition Hit Marker Visual Damage Applied Combat Result
AP < AV Blue Deflection Shield / Spark 0% Damage Projectile completely ricochets. Potential friendly fire bounce hazard.
AP = AV White Hit Marker 50% Damage Partial penetration. 50% damage reduction penalty applied to base damage.
AP > AV Red Hit Marker 100% Damage Full penetration. 100% of weapon damage applied directly to the body part.
Angle > 80° Glancing Ricochet 0% Damage Extreme oblique angle forces ricochet even if weapon AP matches surface AV.

Standard Enemy Armor Tiers in Practice

  • AV 1–2 (Light Armor): Terminid Scavengers, Hunters, Automaton Troopers. Damaged fully by all standard primary assault rifles and SMGs (Liberator, Defender).
  • AV 3 (Medium I): Hive Guards, Scout Strider legs, Warrior heads. Requires weapons with Medium Penetration (Diligence CS, Dominator, Slugger, Senator) to deal full red-marker damage.
  • AV 4 (Medium II): Automaton Devastator torso plates, Spewer heads, Hulk rear heat sinks. Heavy medium weapons (Autocannon, Anti-Materiel Rifle, Laser Cannon) achieve full penetration.
  • AV 5 (Heavy Armor): Charger armor plates, Hulk frontal armor, Factory Strider armor plating. Standard firearms ricochet entirely; requires dedicated Anti-Tank weapons (Quasar, Recoilless, EAT-17, Spear).
  • AV 6–8 (Super Heavy & Structures): Bile Titan carapace, Automaton Turret Tower shells, Fabricator housings. Neutralized primarily through heavy orbital ordnance and high-yield explosives.

Durable Damage: Why High-Damage Weapons Feel Weak

Every enemy entity in Helldivers 2 has two distinct health values: Standard Health and Durable Health.

Soft tissue, such as a Charger’s glowing fleshy rear abdomen, possesses low Armor Value (AV 0), but high Durable Percentage (often 85–90%). If a weapon has high base damage (e.g., standard shotgun pellets) but low durable damage, firing into the rear abdomen deals negligible injury despite the lack of armor.

Conversely, weapons like the Autocannon and Dominator feature high durable damage ratios, allowing them to rapidly pop swollen fleshy weak spots in just a few shots.

Field Rules for Tactical Operators

  1. Never dump ammunition when seeing blue sparks; adjust target angle or swap to a higher AP support weapon immediately.
  2. White hit markers indicate you are losing half your DPS; aim for secondary weak points (head sensors, unarmored joints) to trigger red hit markers.
  3. Against massive fleshy masses (Bile Titan sacks, Charger abdomens), prioritize explosive or high-durable weapons rather than high-fire-rate light caliber munitions.
